I believe that being a leader is an experience in self-discovery. Leadership is being able to take people some place, which means that I need to be adaptable myself. Strength in leadership comes from empowering those around me, believing in them and myself to choose the best destination, solve the problems that arise, and always look forward.
Leadership is important because of the difference we can make with people. As a leader in education, my foremost goal must be academic achievement for our students; that means nurturing the abilities of our teachers and other academic specialists. I believe that professional development is a cornerstone of school leadership. That is why I have spent my career dedicated not only to my students, but serving in various roles developing teachers. As a leader, I am an advocate enabling others to dream and grow, to ignite them to be the best at their craft.
School culture develops from tradition, values, and vision. I believe in listening and asking questions so I can understand the individual members and groups in my school community. Through that understanding, I can help guide our community to a positive, respectful value system where each teacher, student, parent, and staff member is recognized for his or her individuality, contributions are celebrated, and relationships are nurtured as a part of our collective growth. I will seek to develop a community where everyone feels safe to learn and work together, and there is a consistent foundation of kind, accepting, and open communication.
As a leader of a school, I must be diligent about curriculum, instruction, differentiation, and student engagement oversight. My experiences with curriculum integration, standards, teacher observations, and professional development have helped me build a repertoire of skills that will aid in this task. While people are the core of a school, the tools, processes, and procedures guiding those people must be efficient in order for the system to function, focus, and flourish. I will use data and communication to propel our objectives. As a system, I must align our tools with the intellectual capital of our staff in order to facilitate growth.
Leaders are navigators, not only maneuvering through calm, but braving conflict and crisis. I ascribe to a cyclical problem solving process: understanding the problem without admiring it, formulating and evaluating solutions, choosing a solution, planning action, implementing action and evaluating outcomes. This process is successful only with open, transparent conversations. I believe in collaboration, seeking win-win outcomes, and supporting and capacity building rather than demeaning and disciplining. In difficult situations, I remain calm and seek solutions. In crisis, I am dependable, stable, and hopeful.
The foundation of my leadership philosophy is my belief that the educational community should be an always-evolving, supportive, professional environment. It should be a place for everyone to experience a safe, challenging journey to individual and collective accomplishment. As a driving force for this environment, I will have a learning mindset, a trusting mentality, and an encouraging demeanor. I will seek to have my actions match my words across settings, and I will lead with courage and by the strength of my character.
